Na Hoku Means the stars. I am doing a project on the stars to see how my ancestors used the stars to guide them where ever they were going. The Hawaiians used the stars also for telling when it is Makahiki the way to tell is when the big dipper comes and is showing. I want to be able to tell other people how the Hawaiians used them and how they can use them also. I want to be able to keep the Hawaiian culture up because you don't really see that much Hawaiians using the stars for guidance. I want to be able to teach other people about my Hawaiian culture and show how Hawaiians were in the olden days. People need to see that Hawaiians are not weaird and are really actually smart because they came up with a way to come up with time not like other people they came up with clocks and stuff to tell you what time it is but the Hawaiians were smart enough to come up with the telling time with stars.

Just wanted to touch on a point you made. You had said that Hawaiians were the ones who came up with telling time by the stars. This was actually the Egyptians, a culture dating back to 3150 B.C. They were using this method long before Hawaiians even became a culture separate from the Polynesians.
The Egyptians didn't navigate across thousands of miles of open ocean though. The Polynesians left their homeland (probably Taiwan) and sailed all over the Pacific from New Zealand to Easter Island, in boats that Captain Cook said sailed better than anything Europeans could make.
We will never know who was “first” in anything because there where civilizations that predate the Egyptians. Like the Sphinx was was built long before the Egyptians even became. I’m just saying keep an open mind. Western culture has this obsession about who came first and who did what first. The important thing is that all cultures has something to offer humanity and through that discovery we find our connectivity to each other.
